Student Spotlight: Bailey Hardaway, ‘19
US university: Parsons School of Design
Major: Fashion Design
Study abroad program: University of the Arts London, London, semester
Why did you choose the UK?
I have always wanted to travel to Europe. Having never been outside of the United States before and knowing one of the best fashion design schools in the world was here in the UK helped me settle on my study abroad location very easily.
Why did you choose this program?
My home university offers a select number of institutes for us to choose from, so I was very excited that one of them was Central Saint Martins! I was interested in gaining a new perspective on fashion design and research in general; I also wanted the opportunity to explore and experiment further, which this program is well known for.
What was your favourite class?
So far, my favorite classes have actually been my textiles course. I am fairly new to textiles, but have always been interested in creating my own. I love having complete creative control over colour and texture in my textile and then designing onto the body from them.
What’s your best memory from your time abroad?
My best memory is creating so many new friends, both from my home institution and from other universities. I am usually very shy, but we have all become very close in my classes and I love spending time with my peers, hearing about their experiences in life, and seeing the amazing work they create whilst in this program.
What was the greatest challenge you encountered during your time abroad?
Being away from my family is always hard! Because of the time difference I cannot call them as much as I'm used to, but we still make time to talk and write each other.
Describe your housing situation:
I am in student housing, about half an hour away from my campus.
What advice would you give to other students who are thinking about studying abroad in the UK?
Before you come here, try to learn a bit of the slang, it's so easy to get mixed up with the local terms. There's a YouTube channel called City Hacks London that explains a lot of London basics like slang or how to use the transportation here. I would also suggest making time to explore beyond your campus, and go out and have fun while you're here!
Fact about the UK that you think people would be surprised to learn:
When you walk down the street you can hear several different languages and accents, it's such a diverse place!
What do you think you gained from studying abroad?
I have gained a better sense of who I am as a person, a designer, and how I want to communicate that to the world. I have also learned that I love traveling and I'm obsessed with England.
