Supporting research partnerships

In 2012, the British Council announced the winners of the Trilateral Research in Partnership (TRIP) Awards, the first strand of the successful UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) to partner with the United States. Eighteen grants of up to £50,000 (USD $75,000) in funds were awarded to support multidisciplinary research projects between UK, US and Indian higher education institutions

The winning projects covered a wide range of topics including solar physics, influenza virus research, computer gaming across cultures and Indian and Pakistani foreign policy endeavours in Afghanistan.  The projects also represented a broad group of institutions in all three countries. The TRIP Awards aimed to increase the mobility of PhD and post-doctoral students in all three countries, and develop sustainable links between the institutions. Funds were offered to support projects for up to two years.

Award winner Sandy Baldwin of West Virginia University describes his partnership with Bangor University in Wales and Jawaharlal Nehru University in India below:

"Our project develops a critical view of computer gaming, especially massive multiplayer online roleplaying games. How do we recognize and analyze the deep and significant differences in computer gaming across cultures? This is where our project is really unique: our insistence on culture and cultural differences appearing in and through the “world” of games. Such games are a truly global world of “role play” where international teams can meet for shared research and analysis. Our project will really set the future agenda for PhD study in this area."
